Lake & Porter County Underinsured Driver Collision Lawyers
In today’s economy, an increasing number of people drive without insurance or with minimal insurance. If you are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver, you will need to find another source of coverage to pay for your damages. One source is your own uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage.
At Laura L. Rybicki, LLC, in St. John, we offer a free initial consultation to explain how UM/UIM coverage works. Our Northwest Indiana car accident lawyers represent injury victims in Lake County, Porter County and throughout northern Indiana.
What Is Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists Coverage?
UM/UIM coverage is insurance you buy to protect yourself from uninsured or underinsured drivers. If you are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver, your UM/UIM coverage will step in and compensate you for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
Here’s an example. Suppose you are involved in an accident that results in damages of $75,000 and you have $100,000 in UM/UIM coverage. Unfortunately, the person who caused the accident only carries a minimum liability policy of $25,000 per person. In this case, your UM/UIM coverage would step in and cover the remaining $50,000 in damages.
In Indiana, your insurance company is required to offer UM/UIM coverage in an amount equal to the liability portion of your insurance policy.
Do I Need a Lawyer’s Help to Negotiate a UM/UIM Claim?
There are several reasons why it’s important to seek an attorney’s advice when filing an UM/UIM claim against your own insurance company:
- Insurance companies are businesses, and their goal is to pay you as little money as possible. Without a lawyer’s help, you may not get all of the compensation you deserve.
- If you settle your liability claim against the underinsured driver without permission from your insurance company, you may forfeit your right to file a UM/UIM claim.
